Sourcing Circuit Breakers for a European Panel Builder

Circuit breakers are among the most heavily regulated components in any panel. A European panel builder needs more than a competitive price — it needs the right breaking capacity, the correct trip curve, and certification that will satisfy an inspector. Here is how we approach sourcing circuit breakers for the EU market.

Start with the specification, not the price

The same physical size of miniature circuit breaker (MCB) can be a very different product. Before sourcing, four parameters have to be settled:

  • Standard. MCBs for household and similar installations are built to IEC/EN 60898-1. Molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) and breakers for industrial installations follow IEC/EN 60947-2. The standards are not interchangeable, and the markings on the device differ.
  • Breaking capacity (Icn / Icu). The prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation determines whether a 6 kA device is adequate or a 10 kA device is required. Underspecifying is a safety issue, not a cost saving.
  • Trip curve. B, C and D curves respond differently to inrush current. A C-curve device on a circuit with high inrush may nuisance-trip; a B-curve device protecting a motor circuit may not hold.
  • Poles and configuration. 1P, 1P+N, 2P, 3P, 3P+N, 4P — plus whether the device is intended for isolation.

Certification for the European market

Electrical products placed on the EU market must carry CE marking, supported by a Declaration of Conformity and test reports from an accredited laboratory covering the relevant standards. Two practical points matter more than the certificate itself:

  1. The certificate must match the exact model. A certificate covering a "similar" series does not cover the breaker you are buying. Model numbers on the certificate must match the product and its markings.
  2. The certificate holder should be the factory you are buying from — or its legal entity. A certificate issued to an unrelated trading company is a warning sign.

How we source breakers for a panel builder

  1. Specification confirmed in writing — standard, poles, rated current, breaking capacity, curve, and any required approvals.
  2. Factory shortlist. We work within the Liushi cluster, where breaker production is concentrated, and shortlist factories whose certification actually covers the required models.
  3. Samples where the stakes justify it. For a new model, a first order, or a high-volume run, we arrange samples for your approval before committing to production. Breakers are also tested for the mechanical points that matter: terminal torque, trip behaviour, and physical dimensions against the enclosure.
  4. Production and inspection. We verify the marked ratings against the order, check certification markings on the devices themselves, confirm pole configuration and packaging, and inspect a sample of the batch before it is packed.
  5. Shipment. Consolidated and shipped under the agreed trade term, with all documentation — invoice, packing list and certificates — matching the goods.

Common mistakes we see

  • Buying on price alone. A breaker that is 20% cheaper but rated at 4.5 kA where 6 kA is required is not a saving.
  • Assuming certification transfers. A certificate for a 1P 16 A C-curve device does not automatically cover the 3P 63 A version.
  • Ignoring the enclosure. Physical dimensions and terminal layout vary between manufacturers. Breakers that fit one DIN rail layout may not align with an existing busbar system.
  • Mixing standards. IEC 60898 and IEC 60947-2 devices are frequently confused in specifications. Check which one your project actually requires.
